Calorie Confusion

A study published in the Journal of American Dietetic Association last week revealed that many of the calories in frozen food and items in chain restaurants are actually higher than what is listed. The report claims that of the ten chain restaurants that were studied, including Wendy's and Ruby Tuesday, the actual calorie amounts were 18% higher than listed. The calories of frozen meals such as Weight Watchers, Lean Cuisine, South Beach Living, and Healthy Choice averaged 8% higher than listed. The researchers do not think the discrepancies are intentional, but are caused by variations in ingredients and portion size.

Today our contributors offer their opinions on if restaurants and frozen food makers should be made to ensure the nutritional information of their products is accurate and if they would be less likely to eat at a chain restaurant or prepare a frozen meal if unsure if the nutritional information displayed is accurate.
