Instead of updating topics we covered earlier this week, I am going to give an update on the biggest story of the week – the devastating earthquake in Haiti. We did not discuss the earthquake last week because there's nothing to debate – it is an unspeakable tragedy and the world needs to unite to support the victims of this natural disaster.
Reports estimate a minimum of 50,000 are dead, but Haitian officials have said the death toll could rise as high as 200,000. One million are estimated to be homeless. Rotting corpses line city streets while other bodies are buried in mass graves. There is a lack of food, water, and medical supplies.
During the coming days and weeks you will hear about ways you can donate money to help the people of Haiti. Everyone should be wary of unfamiliar organizations seeking donations, as scams are quick to pop up after a disaster strikes. It is always wise to research organizations before donating. The following organizations are well known and reputable, and have made donating as easy as sending a text on your cell phone:
Red Cross: Text HAITI to 90999 ($10 donation)
Yéle Haiti: Text YELE to 501501 ($5 donation)
United Way: Text HAITI to 864833 ($5 donation)
Intl Medical Corps: Text HAITI to 85944 ($10 donation)
