If it's not broke don't fix it.
Basically, I'm not sure why they changed the original format anyhow. Jay Leno is a different category than all the other late night talk show hosts. He took over from Jonny Carson and was groomed for the position for a long time. I remember seeing all the ads about the new change months ago and was very confused as to why NBC was making that move. But, I also understand that the networks have to take chances at times and try new things. I don't know anyone who watches or talks about the Jay Leno Show on a regular basis. It's just something I associate with my insomnia, being up and sick, or on vacation and not having to go to bed by 11pm.
Late Night Talk shows really only appeal to a certain audience. Folks who are up late and are committed to watching them appreciate Jay's peculiar sense of humor. Because he comes from the Johnny Carson generation, I also think there might be an age gap with talk show hosts. As I think back to late night talk show host that have come up in my personal circle of friends, Conan O'Brien and Chelsea Lately on the E network are talked about the most. Chelsea in particular appeals more to my circle and is the only late night show that I will watch.
Jay Leno is a known television figure and has been on television for most of my life if not all of it. I think if his new show didn't pick up that it probably would not have. NBC is making the right choice with moving it back. It takes less than three months for a new show to pick up. If a known television icon like Leno did not get an audience in three months than it's just not going to happen and there is no need to keep it in that time slot any longer. Will I stay up to watch his new time slot? No. If I'm up for any of the reasons listed earlier than maybe but if not, than no ma'am. I'm sure his old fans will be happy to have him back. I'm a fan of Chelsea Lately and think that she should be given a chance to get some NBC action once her contract with E is up. I figured I might as well plug in what I like!
