Ryan: It's not hard to come up with an anecdote about somebody who abuses the system. You sound like one of those conservatives who complains about barefoot and pregnant welfare moms driving Lincolns. Is this any reason to deny assistance to all the other people who have used unemployment support to get by while they find another job?
On what basis do you make such a clear distinction between people who work and people who don't? Is all employment ennobling? Are all people who receive a paycheck for time spent on a job honest and productive? If there's such a big difference between people who work and people who don't, then why pay people anything after they retire? You know there are Americans (though not the "millions" you so casually indict) who have drawn and are drawing far more out of Social Security than was ever put in on their behalf. Why let people retire at all, if work is so important? Let's just euthanize people when they're no longer able to earn a paycheck, shall we?
What skin off your back is it, really, if somebody you know watches television while drawing unemployment? Maybe that's not so bad as building missiles, guns, unsafe vehicles, McFood, and being paid a "good" salary for it -- all the time justifying it with "I gotta make a living" and "If I don't do it, somebody else will."
Roseanne: Raw numbers of "available jobs" mean nothing. Are they all full-time? How many pay only minimum wage? High-tech engineers, government managers, editors, and teachers who get laid off are not necessarily going to be happy to accept work as a fast-food cashier or barista. They may not even be able to survive. Apply a little more acuity to this issue, please.

David Loftus, a free-lance writer and actor, is the author of AMERICAN CURRENTS. A native Oregonian who has lived on the East Coast and traveled much of Europe and parts of Asia and Africa, he makes his home in Portland with his wife Carole and toy fox terrier Pixie. David reads more than a hundred books a year and watches an average of less than two hours of television a week. He does not own a car, has no children, and pretty much avoids meat.
