Looking Back at Election Day 2009: Sasha Smith

I think that it's very interesting that we are making such a big fuss over two Governor races. I guess if I was a Republican party leader and/or had connections to a large media outlet, I would be pumping this as a big story as well. I'm glad that so many more Americans are interested in our country's politics but I can't help but to wonder how much race places a role in this. Watching the media, I sometimes feel as though we are scrutinizing over ever move of our current Black President and the party that he is a part of. We can't help but ignore that race politics play such a huge role in our government right now. Would ever one who was so disinterested before be caring so much? The positive side to this is that we do have many more American engaged and not all for the right reason but at least we have their attention.

So really to dig into this issue let's be real. New Jersey was dealing with endless scandal and corruption issues. The folks in New Jersey really just want to deal with their tax and corruption issues and move on from the past and the Democratic candidate was not it. I was in a political conversation this week with someone who stated Virginia has never had a Governor with the same political affiliation as the current President in 12 years so it seems like the “same old, same old” is going on there. In either case, we all know from history that local and state politics are different for many people. Folks are much more liberal with there Federal politics and more conservative with their state and local politics. I mean two wins... two wins... is it really a big deal? Should the GOP be proud that they lost a big seat in New York and that NYC's mayor had to spend $100 million dollars to win by 51%. If they want to be proud then they should go ahead, but our President is still Black and is still going to be there for a couple more years.

Our country should be focused on uniting and finding a middle ground to get it back from where the GOP had it. It's so funny how folks forget that the past predominately GOP government and Republican President have us in two current wars, education problems, tax problems, and our very large economic problems. At this point, I don't care what party is in what seat. I care about these issues being addressed. The House of Representatives has made some progress with passing the current Healthcare For All bill and it's a step in the right direction. Let's hope our Senate can do the same thing.
