Abolishing "Don't Ask Don't Tell": Nikki Lorenzini

I would like to ask a question: When has someone’s sexual orientation been a hindrance to one’s job? Gays should be able to openly serve in the military. Originally, this policy was put in place because gays were being harassed, sometimes to the point of death, by their fellow servicemen. In an oddly bizarre way, this “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy was put in place to protect them.

Yes, this policy hurts their chances of living honestly in the military. Does it stink for them? Yes it does, and it's horrible. I would not want to be in their position. But I have so many questions regarding this policy. Why would homosexuals want to be in the military when they are not openly accepted? To serve their country only to be harassed by their fellow servicemen? Why would you want to hide a big part of who you are so you can fit in for a job? Can people be truly happy in a situation like this?

If Obama abolishes this, he should follow it up with some type of policy that helps protect harassment that they faced when this policy went into place.
