This story bothers me on many different levels. Let me begin with saying that I have a friend with Down Syndrom. I only became friends with her with in the past year. I work with her mom, and I know she is sensitive to the word "retard." Ever since I met her and her mom, I have become more sensitive to using it, but I am not going around yelling at people for using it. Yes, people should be sensitive to their surroundings and take people's feelings into consideration, but I so think Sarah Palin is blowing this out of proportion. He apologized, that's all he can (and should) do. I do not think that he should be fired for saying that. Honestly, this was a closed door meeting, and we did not get the full story surrounding it (yes, we got the context that it was in, but not the full fledge account). For that, I am not going to jump on the judgement bandwagon on this poor guy. We all make mistakes, and a lot of those times all we can say is "I'm sorry" and learn from our mistakes.
Emanuel has a reputation as being quick tempered and foul mouthed. He's probably not the most sensitive person but I don't think he should lose his job over it.
David Loftus, a free-lance writer and actor, is the author of AMERICAN CURRENTS. A native Oregonian who has lived on the East Coast and traveled much of Europe and parts of Asia and Africa, he makes his home in Portland with his wife Carole and toy fox terrier Pixie. David reads more than a hundred books a year and watches an average of less than two hours of television a week. He does not own a car, has no children, and pretty much avoids meat.
